Mount Gibralfaro: Last Stroll in Málaga

Before leaving Málaga, where I had anchored for two months, my last stroll was on the city’s vantage point, Mount Gibralfaro. Since its settlement, the hill has been the strategic point, overlooking both the Mediterranean and the historic centre. From the ancient Semitic Phoenicia to the Roman Empire, from the Islamic rule to the conquest of Catholicism. Now, it’s a prominent landmark for visitors.

Layers of civilisations are evident in the complex. The 1st-century Roman theatre is at the foot of the hill. Alcazaba of Málaga, built during the Muslim period in the 11th century, is one of the best-preserved kasbahs (old Islamic fortresses) in Spain. And the Medieval castle at the peak of the hill, the Castle of Gibralfaro, built in the 14th century, offers panoramic views of the city.

I left this one for the last day and almost skipped one of the must-dos in Málaga. In fact, there are still some attractions and museums I didn’t get to while anchoring there. Nonetheless, I am grateful for the two months in the city. And this stroll was an appropriate farewell.

Coming up next, the last city before heading back to Bangkok—Madrid.
